Saint Saturdays: St Joseph

On the first Saturday of every month, we will post the story of the saint of the month. For May, the saint is none other than St Joseph.

St Joseph was the husband to Mary, the Blessed Virgin and Mother of Jesus. Joseph was Jesus foster father here on earth and was the head of the Holy Family. Everything we know about Joseph is from the Bible. We know that Mary and Joseph were engaged and married. Joseph received a dream from an angel telling him to take Mary as his wife. Joseph took Mary to Bethlehem when she was pregnant with Jesus. He was with Mary in the manger when Jesus was born on the first Christmas. He saw the angels, the shepherds and the wise men. He bravely protected Mary and Jesus when they had to run to Egypt to hide from the evil people trying to hurt Jesus. Joseph brought Mary and Jesus back to Nazareth when it was safe and raised Jesus in a loving home there. The bible also tells us that Joseph was a carpenter and we can imagine that he taught Jesus how to build things as well.
The Bible never mentions words that Joseph said but we know from his actions that he was a good father and husband. He had a deep faith in God and protected his family. He was a hard worker and provided food and a home for his family. His whole life was centered on Jesus and Mary. God trusted him with their care so Joseph must have been a very special person.
